England lost 12-19 to Wales at Twickenham on 25 February, 2012 but there was controversy towards the end as Saracens winger David Strettle had a try disallowed at the corner. Scottish video referee Iain Ramage ruled that Strettle hadn’t done enough to bring England on level terms after almost five minutes of deliberation.

  1. Not really – very clear from the in goal shot that he grounded the ball. The touch line view shows that he was over the line at this point, before North arrived, so it must have been a try.

What are these TMOs for if they are not able to deduce what can be easily seen from the BBC coverage.

  2. Clearly touched down from at least one angle that makes its conclusive a Try. pointless having tv referees if they cant make the right decisions. Second angle shown in the tv above has the payers obscuring the try all you can see is the aftermath so if worthless. First angle clearly shows Strettle placing the ball down as hes turned over.

  3. oh well its over now, im sure the rule is to aplly downward pressure on the ball, thats quite hard to do when youre underneath the ball, thats why it was inconclusive, about time a ropey decision went our way for a change. see you next year

    • Actually, downward pressure is only required by the laws in the event of a loose ball in goal.

In this case, as he was holding the ball, under the rugby laws it only needed to touch a blade of grass, which it clearly did.

  4. I am truely flabberghasted at this outrageous decision and I am startin to consider stopping watching rugby because of it. It was clearly a try from every angle. I samshed my TV screen in anger and cannot be held responsible for any harm I do to the next Welsh person I meet.

  5. I am absolutely shocked that the reason the video ref came back with was that it was inconclusive!

The rule has always been that if it is inconclusive that the decision goes with the attacking side…..why on earth have a video ref when they do not understand the rules!!!!

  6. Firstly downward pressure is needed as he did not have full control over the ball and thanks to a close up video on youtube posted by an England fan it clearly shows him losing control of the ball. Secondly Tarquin if your going to cry over one decision that does not go your way and then smash your telly and threaten Welsh people and claim to never watch rugby again then should probably shouldn’t of started watching rugby and maybe of stuck to a more suitable sport, such as football. Rachel the rule is not if it is inconclusive then award the try, that’s contradictory and just absurd. The question is whether or not they can award a try and it being inconclusive clearly states that there is a massive reason not to award one. This debate also clearly shows why TMO’s are paid so much and fans are not.

  7. Interesting how it can still be difficult, with the press of bodies, to determine what happened conclusively, even on video reply.

I wonder if that’s why the “touchdown” in American Football evolved from requiring the ball to be touched to the ground to simply breaking the plane of the goal line – which is still dicey to determine at times?
